The bottle lives in the refrigerator door, second shelf down, behind the mustard. It is Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet, an 8 ounce bottle of liquid fish oil, and it has been there since February 2025. Our dog Otis is an 11 year old black Lab mix, 74 pounds, with arthritis in both hips and a stiff left elbow. Dr. Haldane, his vet since he was a puppy, looked at the label before we started it. She said fish oil was worth adding. She did not say it would fix his hips.
I keep a spiral notebook on the kitchen counter. One line a day: how Otis got up, how he did on the three concrete steps off the back porch, how far we walked. In October 2024 we were down to about 12 minutes. He was slow getting off the floor and slower on the steps. I wanted a record because I did not trust my memory. When you see a dog every day, you can talk yourself into almost anything.
Otis started Cosequin soft chews in November 2024, on Dr. Haldane's suggestion. That was first. The Nordic Naturals came later, in February 2025, after Dr. Haldane asked what else he was on and suggested a fish oil. We added one thing at a time, months apart, so the notebook had a chance to show something. I cannot prove which supplement did what. I can tell you what I saw. That is the whole point of this.
The Nordic Naturals bottle is unflavored and liquid. The label says 1380 mg fish oil with EPA and DHA. I pour the amount from the weight chart over his breakfast kibble at 7 a.m. It smells like fish. Otis does not care. Ron does. The bottle goes back in the refrigerator door after opening, not on the counter. That is where it stays.
Eight weeks in, I wrote down that his coat was less flaky. By spring it looked shinier. I did not write down a joint change I could point to. His hips were the same. The steps were the same. I want to be plain about that because I have read enough reviews that make every supplement sound like a new dog. Nordic Naturals did not do that for Otis. What it did do was make his coat better, and Dr. Haldane was glad he was on it for the other things fish oil supports, his heart and eyes among them.
I did not write down a joint change I could point to. I wrote down that his coat was less flaky and shinier. That is the honest result.
The fish oil Dr. Haldane approved, still in our refrigerator door
Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet is the liquid fish oil Otis has had over breakfast since February 2025. It is unflavored, 8 ounces, and made with EPA and DHA from fish oil. If your own vet has cleared fish oil for your dog, this is the one we use.
Amazon Check Today's Price on Amazon →Here is what else changed around here. The Zesty Paws Mussel Mobility Bites started in May 2025, the LubriSyn in September 2025, the turmeric in February 2026. Otis is still on all of them, along with the Cosequin. I did not stop one to test another. That would have been a cleaner experiment and a worse year for him. So the notebook is a record of a household, not a lab. If you want a single cause, I cannot give you one.
The things I can measure are small and real. He gets up from the floor easier than he did in October 2024. He walks about 20 minutes now, steady since summer 2025. He goes down the three porch steps without the hitch he used to have. Coming up is still slow. Cold, wet days are still his worst. He does not jump into the Equinox. Ron lifts his back end in, and that has not changed. No supplement made Otis run or jump, and I would not tell you otherwise.
I nearly skipped the Nordic Naturals because he was already on Cosequin. I am glad I did not. Not because it turned his hips around. Because Dr. Haldane wanted him on fish oil, and this was the bottle she okayed. The label is non-GMO, gluten-free and dairy-free, with no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. I do understand that I trust the vet who has seen him since he was a puppy, and I trust what I wrote in the notebook. Otis has never had a bad reaction to any of the five.
One more practical thing. The bottle is 8 ounces, and it takes us a while to go through it. It stays cold, the cap goes back on, and I write the start date on the label with a Sharpie. The weight chart on the bottle is where I would start. Otis is 74 pounds. I did not guess at the amount. I used the chart and I asked Dr. Haldane.
What I'd Tell You If We Were Sitting at My Kitchen Table
If we were sitting at my kitchen table, I would tell you three things. First, ask your vet before you add anything, including fish oil. Second, add one thing at a time and give it two months. I started looking for changes at two weeks and that was too soon for us. Third, keep a note. Not because you are doing science. Because a dog changes so slowly that you will forget what last October looked like.
I would also tell you not to expect a cure. Otis is 11. He has arthritis in both hips and a stiff left elbow. He is not young again. The Nordic Naturals is part of a routine that includes Cosequin, two other joint products, a turmeric tablet with dinner, rubber backed runners in the hall, and a husband who lifts a back end into a Chevy Equinox. If you are standing in front of a wall of bottles, that is my honest picture. The fish oil did right by his coat. The rest of it is a dog who is doing a little better than he was two years ago.
If your vet says fish oil, this is the bottle in our door
Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet is liquid, unflavored, 8 ounces, with 1380 mg fish oil and EPA and DHA. Otis has had it over breakfast since February 2025. Ask your own vet before you start, then write the date on the bottle.
